Understanding the sizing of a tyre

A tyre may have something similar to 16x4.8/4.0x8 embossed on the side.

16x4.8/4.0x8 breaks down to:

16" tyre diameter
4.8″ tyre width 4.0″ depth from the rim to the tread
8″ rim.

If the wheel is missing the tyre width number (e.g. 16x 4.0x8),
then the width is the same as the depth (i.e. 4″).
